CALLING ALL KIDS-HE HOG THE ATOMIC PIG

He Hog is the world's most powerful pig. He has the coolest super powers ever:
X-Ray nipples- they emit twin beams of laser energy that can slice through butter.
Finger and Thumb breath: He can flip light switches on and off with them.
Atomic smoothocity: So smooth is his perfect rind, that pants won't stick to him!
Ultra Tasteocity: He has the world's most sensitive taste buds, tasting substances never before discovered.
He can taste guilt-he frequently donates this talent to the Police Line-Up downtown.

He has super-suavity. Girls love him!
He only has one weakness. While kryptonite is the one substance that can weaken Superman, the only thing that can stop He Hog is marmalade on his butt. But try and get it on there!
This is his teenaged sidekick--Half Life The Decaying Molecule. He has no thrilling powers. He's just there so the criminals can kidnap him and hold him for ransom from He Hog. He Hog loves him as if he were one of his very own molecules-which actually he is!

He Hog has many arch-enemies.

This is Mr. Meat.
Mr.Meat has the power of meat. He was raised by meat. He can summon meat to his bidding. He is determined to free meats from all over the world and give them voting rights.
He has a love-hate relationship with He Hog. On the one hand, he loves him-because He Hog is the greatest collection of meats in the world-a mess of super meats!
On the other hand he hates He Hog for not releasing his meats... for enslaving them to his skeleton.
Mr. Meat is slightly unhinged.

Whattaya think? Wanna hear more?

Oh man, it's like I've been in rehab for all these years without my Ren & Stimpy, and suddenly I've relapsed and found myself in dire wanting.

Thank you, Mr. Stuff. I can live again.

Half Life the Decaying Molecue? Its like I'm in love again. Brilliant.

I wonder if Mr.Meat likes to get beaten up! You know, to get his steaks tenderized.
This show really must happen, I'm suddenly having these flashbacks that go way back to Night of the Bat-bat!!

I'd love to see this show get made. But in a market with so much anime, etc., it doesn't look too likely that we'll get to see kids cartoons such as these. But I'm sure there is an audience for it.

We don't have any little kiddies in my house, but I would sure as bunk watch this! Does it have to be a KID's show? Isn't there a market enough with us old fans?

I've always wanted to see He Hog in action!!! Ever since I think I saw him, what, nearly a decade ago on the ol' Spumco site... I can see the kids now, running into walls playing with their stuffed He-Hog doll! Pretending to zap their evil sisters with nipple beams. I don't have any kids around here to give their comments, so hopefully some other comments will fly in with some kiddie insight!

danG said...

The only problem here may be his weakness, don't get me wrong, it would be an incredible comment on the marketing machine to see parents fighting over tubs of marmalade at christmas time so little bobby and suzy can have everthing they ever wanted, It's just that superman became lame seeing the millions ways that villians could slap his ass with kryptonite that you stopped caring after awhile. And half-life might need a little something too, like a kick ass headband! Thx John.

Personally, I might take out the word Atomic from the title. People might confuse it with Atomic Betty. But, AB might only be showed in Canada so it might not matter. Either way, I'd liek to see it on TV as well.

I got my little sister (age 13), to check out this post:

She thought that He-Hog is the cutest thing she's ever seen. She loves pigs, and just cute stuff in general. She absolutely loved his bashfulness in that girly-picture (and she wasn't offended that the gal was drawn super-sexy -- I asked her just in case, as there are people who often complain about that stuff). My sister also thought that He Hog's super powers were hilarious. She thought the drawing of him sucking on that guy's head was awesome, and she said, "I wanna see this cartoon! Those jerks should put it on!" The only thing she thought was cuter than He Hog was Half-Life! She loved the bit about He Hog loving Half-life. I'm not sure how she felt about MrMeat (as she's not a big fan of meat), but she thought the 'Lipo Suck' vacuum was really funny. So, she says that this show should be on TV, to give her something good to watch (she's channel surfing right now, so this couldn't have come at a better time).

As for me: I'm in the '18 - 25' group... so that means I make money, and I spend money. I love the ideas for this show -- they look hilarious, fun, and fresh. I would watch this show, I would buy this show on DVD, and I would buy toys of this show -- easily!

Trevour said...

I think his WEAKNESS is the funniest part!!! And He Hog has always been Atomic, and has been around for ages before Atomic Betty was even created. So keep it all!

I have no children, but me and the Mrs. would definitely check out He-Hog. We love your odd sensibilities Mr. K.

Mr. Meat "hates He Hog for not releasing his meats... for enslaving them to his skeleton." Hilarious. And I really like the guy in the police lineup with remoras clinging to his body. And the little Peter-Lorre-like guy too.

I would definitely watch/purchase this.

Mitch K said...

Do a Heartaches post just like this one sometime, and I'll show my sister that. It'll make more of an impression on her than just those three pictures you posted earlier this week.

I'm a huge Spumco Fan, and I spent a lot of money back in the Mid 90's buying ALL of the stuff that you sold through the "Lodge". I bought the Skateboards, The Dolls, The NBC Cels... Every goddamn thing.

Ever since that newsletter talked about the USA deal I have waited to see He Hog become a reality. Today seeing that Police Line up proves that when someone with some cash finally wakes up and decides to make this happen you will all be able to kick back and retire on that sweet X-Ray Nipple cash together.

This Blog is the best. And I'm going to get my young cousins opinion on the Kid shows this weekend.

Thanks for all of the great drawings!

He-Hog needs a super squeal that he makes before he uses some of his more powerful superpowers. It deafens and shocks his enemies. It shakes the ground and sets off car alarms.

Also, his enemies always need to be making jokes about him being a "porker" or when he says something funny tell him to stop "hamming it up." Or when they are about to shoot him with a death ray tell him they are going to "fry him like bacon"

A side kick called "egg man" wouldn't be bad. I love ham and eggs.

Ahh man, I have went and made myself hungry. I believe I'll go make breakfast.

It's great to see more of He-Hawg in all his glorious Hogg-inity John... though I am still secretly harboring hope that you just might consider posting that animatic.

I think this is EXACTLY the kind of fun, action packed cartoon that has been missing from the airwaves for fifty years or more. The kind of cartoon that both Parents AND their children can sit down and watch together by CHOICE, because they can each get something different out of it.

Why does it look like those last two images are some sort of cut-outs pasted onto colored shapes?

Was that done as part of the Animatic process to make it easier to drop these guys onto different BG's and such?

Just Curious.

Hi Mr. K, I told my kids all about the He Hog. (I'm great at telling them stories).

They loved half life. (even if it's chemically impossible-- anything is possible in cartoons. Trust me those anvils hurt, whew!)

They asked me 1st about his nemesis (remember, I'm the one with the 2 boys -- 9 & 11 and a daughter who wants to know more about the pieces of skin with faces).

They said it made perfect sense that his arch enemy would be a meat fanatic because He Hog is the perfect specimen of meatiness.

They thought it was x-tra funny that Half-life had but one skill --to be kidnapped.

And the marmalade on the but was a riot. They said yeah, I'd like to see someone TRY to get that on his bum! Perhaps relating it to their own experiences w/marmalade?

I might be mistaken but does this pig go sans in the underwear dept.?

I thought I saw some yellow drawls, but in the marmalade shot they were no where to be found.

Which begs the question: What makes us the weakest often makes us feel so good??

Mr.K, thanks for the comment on my blog. Yep, I run a licensed facility out of my home. it's about a dozen children ages 6months to 11years and everything in between. and when I'm not doing that, my 'tweens have their friends over...

It's funny, parents don't really like their children watching t.v. and for the most part I'm with them; theres alot of crap on. But cartoons were such a huge part of my life growing up in the 70's. I would hate to deprive children of them!

My favorites were the kinds of toons that were funny w/out the sound (I think you wrote about that somewhere in your blog). They are the most engaging, and when ever this type of cartoon comes on I get a big response from my kids.

I introduced my kids to R&S last year and they watch it religiously. I can even use it as leverage to behave. Wow. Thanks Mr. K!

My favorites were old episodes of felix the cat, popeye, looney tunes, etc. I have to go now must watch cartoons...

John, In you own words, What are you planning to do with this new media Direct-to-DVD, how you can see it being a success and how this can have the audiance coming in and having the artest spitting in Hollywood executives eyes ?

He said it was a really funny premise. He said he could imagine hilarious dialogue between he-Hog and Mr. Meat. He said the drawings are really cool and he especially liked the police line-up pic. He liked how his weakness is the weirdest thing ever: I'd call that quagged up.

John, in my opinion you were the greatest animator of the 20th century (albeit a sum of influences) and this stuff makes it look like you could make it as the greatest in the early 21st. However I must make one point I noticed with the recent 'adult' R+S. IT WAS TOO WELL ANIMATED!!! There was none of that lingering disgustingness that made me want to barf when I was ten. Please give the animators a break. 24 pictures a second is worth 2400 words, but one picture over 3 seconds have stuck with me for a lifetime. Thanks for your influence. You're up there with Bukowski.

One thing that I feel warrants mentioning here is the amazing character design in the police lineup image. If that was an image from just about any current cartoon on television, an image that actually made it to air no less, you'd see a well designed main character and 3 totally generic bad guys and a generic cop. The Spumco quality is in the details, each of them are amazing looking even if they aren't the focus. Shoot, some MAIN characters (like Bloo in Foster's) have insanely lazy character design.

The art looks great for he hog. I especially love the police line up. I enjoyed the peter lorre caricature and thought the shading for the muscles and spine of he hogs back was great in the pic. I also have always loved the mixing of animals and people as almost equals in cartoons. I also love the classic hannah barbera style of Mr. Meat.
I love the idea of you doing another superhero cartoon. I always loved your rendition of sperheroes and superhero cartoons. I grew up watching the new adventures of mighty mouse and still use it as one of my references while I am trying to teach myself animation. The stories and ideas that came out of your mighty mouse cartoon were great. The ripping friends was also an amazing cartoon. I think that the genre of superhero cartoons is a concept that will never get old as long as their are fresh ideas. This idea is fresh and zany, which is exactly what animation needs right now.

to the guy who says Bloo on fosters's is a lazy character design...

yes, these spumco characters are awesome... however details do not make a design good. have you watched any upa or seen the over-detailed original tom and jerry?

Bloo is an awesome character and you're probably just jealous because you didn't have the balls to turn such a simplified design into a cartoon superstar first...

by your standard of the intricacy of details defining the quality of an animated character, the typical (high detail) anime design is better than a tex avery (or spumco for that matter)design.

maybe you just meant that the selective details that spumco throws in here and there are great, and i agree, but it doesn't mean everyone should do that...

I, too was disapointed by Camp Lazlo. Spongebob has been that crew's best show so far, imho, but Rocko was brilliant, too. The same Rocko and Spongebob writers working on a new show and it not being really good? I wouldn't have believed it until I saw Camp Lazo. TOO MANY CHARACTERS.

Another thing: QUIT USING THE WORD RANDOM TO DESCRIBE THINGS, PEOPLE. IT'S GOTTEN OLD. USE ANOTHER WORD.

I swear, everytime you try to make a surreal joke or a quagmire, like "The points of wurst: Three. Two-in-one." people ALWAYS say: "LOL THAT WAS LIKE SOOO RANDOM HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH" I wish these people would SHUT THE F*** UP!! And stop using the words monkey, or cheese, or purple in attempts to make surreal humuor. It's NOT funny.

the design is somewhat bland, very similar to mighty mouse.

I would love to see He-hog in a 3 way crossover battle with the Ripping Friends and Powdered toastman. Well, it's a good dream, I would gladly settle for watching him smack around Mr. Meat on my television. I would instantly purchase DVDs of this, George Liquor or any Spumco related activities.

Okay, I'm an 18 year old (that sort of counts as a kid, right?) guy and I need to say... This cartoon looks like the best thing in the world. I love funny superheroes like the Tick and Freakazoid, and this looks even better than those!

First of all, his name is He Hog. It almost makes sense, but it really doesn't. Comedy right there in the title!

Secondly, his superpowers are awesome. They're so weird, yet at the same time they seem to suit him. Love it. Especially the nipple beams.

His weakness is marmalade on his butt. It makes no sense, but it also makes me very curious to see how in the world a villain would get marmalade on his butt. VERY curious.

Half Life the Decaying Molecule. "He's just there so the criminals can kidnap him and hold him for ransom from He Hog." This is just a great idea no matter how you look at it. I can't describe how funny the whole thing is to me.

I like Mr. Meat's "love-hate" relationship with He Hog. He Hog has great meats, but he keeps them in his body, "enslaving them to his skeleton."

The amount of character in this concept is almost too much to bear, especially when you compare it to other cartoons that're on the air. Could you please post a story like you did for the Heartaches? I'd love to hear more.

Dude, is it an homage to the WONDER WART HOG by Gilbert Shelton?

Awesome idea!
I especially loved the police lineup. That cop is oddly reminiscent of Chuck Jones' Officer Short Shrift from The Phantom Tollbooth.
Keep up the good work!

My little brother went nuts when I showed this to him. He's six years old. Here's what he thought:
He loves the bizare super powers. He just loves them. His favorite was the "guilt tasting" and I had to print him out a copy of that picture he thought it was so funny!
He didn't quite get the joke with "Half Life, the Decaying Molecule", but he liked him all the same. I really don't know why, he just does.
It's great that your adding some jokes that are targeted towards an older audiance again! I missed that from you.
As for Mr. Meat...he thought that was just crazy! I rather like the fact that he appears to be just a middle-aged loser who's off his rocker. What a great villian!
Well, thank you for the possiblility that my brother and I can have thirty minutes of peace harmony every saturday morning while eating sugar coated ceral.

Perhaps there should be villain slash love interest. She Sheep. Like Catwoman to Batman. Perhaps fleece related powers, such as the ability to make wool sweaters extra itchy. I love the posted artwork too!!

Hi John, I had my 13 year old son read the He-Hog synopsis. He giggled hysterically at the Mr. Meat section. Hope that helps.

I cannot WAIT to see the episode when HE-HOG goes up against the Prophet Muhammad, out-pimping him and getting all the virgins!

They'll love it in Denmark!

I found the picture on Supumco YEARS ago and never knew anything about him. I called him HeroHog and adopted that as my screen name. I later made an avatar using the Spumco image as a model. I had no idea that he was ever more than a doodle! Imagine my surprise at finding this site all these years later!
Here I am as He(ro)Hog this past Halloween.
