There are a lot of amazing techniques, styles and ideas that only existed in black and white cartoons and disappeared when cartoons started to get more respectable. Marc loves to show them to you.

I would have put direct links, but couldn't figure out how his archives work, but hunt around his site. There's lots of good stuff there!

Got to love the classic style, but I must admit I have other motives for commenting. I'm an animation student, and I need an interview. It could be by way of e-mailed question, should you choose to accept my proposal. You are why I want to animate, I want to be part of the classic revival. To hell with the path animation has taken! Bring back the creative element that has been lacking on a large scale for far to long. If you are able to do so, please email me at rimmyt@graffiti.net No matter your decision, just know you have another life-long fan, another face among the seas of discontentees.
Hey - thanks for the plug! I'll go ahead and put some links on there....
whenever I see the Simpsons now I wonder how much funnier they might have been if they were cartoony. They seem to be pretty basci rubber hose style.
John.. you are one super crazy talented dude!! After various google searches and wondering "what ever happened to John K???", I finally stumbled on this site. I can't wait to tear through all of this blog!! You Rock dude...
oh man! it's seeing stuff like this that makes me feel more and more cheated by seth mcfarlane, matt groening, mike judge et al.
in fact, is it my imagination or would family guy be much funnier if it were live action? kinda like married with children almost.
i have drawings i wanna post but my scanner is broken.
:0( this sucks because i wanted to do that musical beat test you posted earlier with bosko, but with no scanner, lightbox or animation program, i am, sadly, lacking.
one last thing, john: where can i find a scan of preston blair's instructions on how to make a lightboard / animation desk? i used to have the book, but the ravages of time have been unkind and jerry beck's scans of the old version don't include the instructions on the last page.... would you help me with that?
I <3 Marc!
Those Surreal images are frcikin' crazy !
Surrealism.
Any form of surrealism is beautiful in animation, if done right.
Great images!

WOW!!! Swing You Sinners is AMAZING! Everything moves and its' so full of life! I love the music too. Everything morphs into stuff in musical timing. genius.
Hi John, I have an off-topic question: Was your character, Sody Pop, inspired or named after Bob Clampett's wife, Sody Clampett. I was reading an interview about Bob Clampett and his wife's name popped up.
Here's one that's been bugging me for years: does anyone remember the B&W cartoon where crazy machinery takes a series of big logs and grinds them down into individual toothpicks and places each one in a box? Judging by the fascination with machinery, I'm inclined to think it was a
Fleicsher studio cartoon, but I'm not sure. I don't even remember if there was a main character or just a musical montage. When I was a kid (early '70s) everyone knew this cartoon from TV, now no one does. Anyone? Please?
