Great to see more of your stuff on TV.

BEAUTYFULL!!!

The other thing I like about your work John is that Im not only enjoy it with my eyes, my whole body feels the cartoon! gives me strange feelings when I see them.

The sound effects are also special , where did you take? Are reused?

Scott Cardona said...

Hey great animation john.
btw...I wondering how you liked toon boom compared to flash

Trevour said...

Incredible! Pure cartoony fun!!!

Amazing! I love this!

HAR! Amazing!! I hope you keep doing these Adult Swim bumpers for a long time! I love all these experiments

Is this the bumper you were talking about with abstract anime expressions but with rubber hose characters and movements?

Yowp said...

The opening music's great, too, John.

Mattieshoe said...

My favorite bumper so far, Absolutely brilliant, John.

Is the Black Piehole saying "help me" in Japanese towards the end?

Yes

Can't wait to see her animated !

John, each new animation you post is pure bliss. I only regret that the camera movements can feel hesitating at some moments.
I watched your Simpson animation ... 20 times, maybe ? And it's still not enough.

By the way, who made the music and sound effects in your latest animations ?

Sandra Rivas said...

That was amazing! I love how the camera worked!

JohnK said...

Hi Paul: The sound effects are part of my library which includes the classic HB fx (among others) plus some we created ourselves with Tim Borquez for Ren and Stimpy

Scott: I like Toon Boom way more than Flash. You have to trick Flash into letting you animate. It's easy to animate in Toonboom-although the interface needs work, and so do the simple tools like cut and paste

Joshua, yes this is sort of inspired by old time anime and rubber hose cartoons

Yowp: I discovered a lot of music through you!

Olivier: the music comes from the APM stock music library
thanks to everyone else for commenting!

Why the hell haven't Adult Swim given you a show yet?

Probably my favorite Adult Swim bumper. Great job!

Awesome! So much energy in the animation and drawings! I love it!

Great stuff John! :)

Joshua Kahan said...

I really love this, the rubbery-ness and the way you've done the space.

How did you get the depth with the stars? Was all the background work done in a 3D environment? It looks really great.

The Butcher said...

Wow, these promos just keep getting better and better. That was pure eye candy. Maybe I should start watching Adult Swim again.

Do you think they'll someday give you a show?

Paulrus said...

@Joshua - yes, the stars, moon, etc., are all 3D. They were done in Softimage. The stars at the end are instanced geometry in ICE that are constrained inside of hidden tube shapes.

This was an amazing project to work on. As I told John - I think he's at a tipping point. There's just been so much cartoony goodness coming from him this year that good things are bound to happen soon.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions about the 3D elements. I'm more than happy to answer them.

Evham said...

I don't know what I expected, but that was great! I love how the stars rotated as part of the composition. MORE.

Hey John -

I've got a friend at work whose mother works for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and is currently working with a wish child who has asked for a tricked out animation set-up. They need a kind, knowing specialist like yourself to help by looking over a list of computer specs and animation software (make sure the items requested are compatible and not redundant, suggestions, etc.).

Could you help out?

Kevin Langley said...

I really liked the camera moves in this one. Especially when he starts to take flight. Oh, and the changing of color on the fist. Too bad they don't want show like this on Adult Swim.

BlakeJ said...

That was so friggin' cool! And Bimbo's takes (you can't spell "well executed" without "cute")!

The stars and microbe things were neat, and I like the shiny anime-tongue. Also, the floating mouth reminded me of certain Clampett cartoons!

Well done, I will be watching A.S. tonight for more!

Frank Forte said...

That's pretty trippy man!!!--but that green 3D meteor looks really out of place. You like that John? Why not do a 2D outline render and a painted texture map. so it looks like a old HB background? But would still rotate in 3d.

K-T said...

Great! My favorite bumper so far... although, I think I'm going to like the UPA Kirk Douglas one more. It just looks so great from the clips you posted.

Is that one nearing completion?

Noel said...

I agree with Joshua Kahan......the depth is amazing!!! Truly inspiring John K, keep up the good work

Lee Kalba said...

If you wouldn't mind taking a look. I'd appreciate some feedback. Hopefully, that link is clickable. Email is l.kalba.x@gmail.com
Delete this, when done.

Also, the cartoon looks great. One can really feel the movement and it has a nice sense of the old anime, which was so heavily influenced by the 30's rubber hose cartoons.

I have a few questions

Question #1: How is the movie process going?

Question #2: In said movie, will there be Clamett shorts preceding it like in the days of yore.

It would be nice for your animation to go from the small screen to the big screen where it belongs.

Thank you

Roberto González said...

I loved this! Definitely leaves me with the interest of watch a whole cartoon in this style. Great job!

Sven Hoek said...

WOW, that was beautiful. Makes me want to see the whole cartoon. Adult swim should let you run the network.

James Nethery said...

That's a nice walk cycle John! I think this is my favorite of the bumpers you've posted so far.

The Mush said...

Great bumper, John. I gotta question though. Is there an affordable way to get ToonBoom or something similar for one person? Nice Mickey Mouseish/Astroboyish character

JohnK said...

Get Toonboom animate

or if you are just starting out, toon boom studio

they have sales all the time too, so just check their page for a couple weeks

Robert G. Schaad said...

To paraphrase: Amazing!! Colossal!! Stupendous!!

And it's good too!

Lluis fuzzhound said...

that's awesome!!! I'm loving your new cartoons!!! always so good!!! wicked!

Louis said...

I love the animation. I love how you used rubber hose as something special and not just something simpler. I'd like to see more like this !

A little disturbed by all the camera movements though (but I'm sure I'm not the first one to say that).

Anyway, lots of fun.

I'd be interested to know what you thing of Digicel FlipBook Pro, if you've tried it. I've heard the interface was really simple and the tools worked in a very instinctive way. I think they've used it for The Princess and the Frog.

Keep the good work, I really loved that.

Cheers,

Louis

PS: I really love your Simpsons couch gag, too !

Trevour said...

This one was especially fun to analyze frame by frame - thanks for posting it as QuickTime! The sequence of taking off/flying was a real treat. I also love the different layers of depth and how all the stars move around.

Eric Bauza said...

Holy Crap - that was great! I'd watch that show!

Pedro Vargas said...

Oh, man! Beautiful!!! So yummy for the eyes. Cartoony and fun! I also can't stop thinking about The Simpson's opening. It's just so friggin' amazing!! Really great work you've been doing lately, John!

Carmine said...

Awesome! Really really cool. Please please please post all your Adult Swim bumpers so those of us who don't have cable can enjoy. Your animation is just the best.

Zoran Taylor said...

So....Astro-Mouse is coming to the rescue of Miss Blackhole's........"purity"?

Is there a main sort of gag in this you were intending for AS audiences to get, or was the idea just "make this thing look really damn cool"? Well, you sure succeeded at that part! That irridescent green moom is probably the greatest cheat of your typical colour theories you've ever done. For some reason the new digital stuff tends to make me dizzy the first time through, but if I just make sure I'M sitting still the whole time, that seems to go away. Same with the couch gag. Stupid Fox uplaoding it unfinished! Almost ruined it for lots of people!

JohnK said...

Hi Zoran

it's sort of part 1 of the story

these bumpers are so short, it's very hard to get a "story" done in 15 or 30 seconds

the gags and stories are just a a background for me to combine some cartoon styles that inspire me

we'll see if Adult Swim orders part 2

Sven Hoek said...

Adult Swim seems to be getting smarter, they would be very wise to order part 2 and 3, maybe the Simpsons thing will make them wake up to the wonders of your nipples.

That spinning green moon is so detailed and moves so realistically, it draws my eyes to it every time I watch it. I kinda like it.

Adult Swim, please give John K. the keys to your vehicle. He will drive it off a cliff and it will be an exhilirating ride and you will probably shit yourself but when you start flying dont bother thanking him, just give him a big raise so he can make a full length animated masterpiece and bring Harmony to the universe. Amen.

Charles M. said...

This short is a COSMIC MARVEL!! I'll definitely be looking for more on AS.

Can't believe I missed this post-- yes, my name is spelled right and yes this was amazing to work on!!
